New year, new blog

Jo Chandler, Operations Manager of ABC shares the latest updates and news from the charity in new regular bi-monthly blog posts

As easy as ABC...

Jo presenting at Sydenham High in January 2023

…said no-one ever about public speaking! When I was asked to present to the pupils at Sydenham High of course I had to say yes, despite having a lifelong fear of standing on a stage and have people listen to what I have to say. Especially to a crowd of 450 teenagers first thing on a Wednesday morning! Luckily the lovely pupils at the school were kind and listened attentively whilst I did my best to inspire them about ABC, the work we do and the difference a book donation could make to the charity and ABC’s next library project. It must have worked, as Sydenham High School as well as Bromley High and Blackheath High are all holding book drives for ABC Book Club. The girls of SE London unite! Thanks to the Girls' Day School Trust (GDST) for their support.

Over 3,500 books delivered

Team from John Payne in Blackheath at John Ball Primary in SE3

Over 3,500 books were delivered to 7 lucky schools who won 500 books apiece in ABC’s mammoth Christmas Quiz competition. The Acorn Group’s high street branches all pitched in to distribute the quizzes amongst the local community and seven winning entries were selected. The pupils not only won 500 books for their school library, they also won a book bundle especially curated for themselves too according to their reading age and interests. Well done to all who entered, and if you didn’t win, best of luck for the next prize draw! Watch this space for upcoming events that you can get involved in.

We’ve had a bit of a revamp!

Pupils from library projects now feature on our website

Regular visitors to the website will have noticed a change in the graphics and move away from our original imagery and into our own bespoke style. A big shout out has to go to our models, all of whom are pupils at the schools we’ve done library projects in. We love the fact that our images are authentic. And best of all that the children are genuinely reading and enjoying the books they are holding. They celebrate what ABC is all about! The ability to have access to books that they choose for themselves and read for pleasure.Featured in the imagery on our website are pupils from Henwick Primary School in Eltham, Cooper’s Lane in Grove Park, Longlands School in Sidcup, Grey’s Farm Primary School in Orpington and Riverside Primary School in Rainham.

Thanks for reading, for regular updates on the charity make sure you check back again soon.
