Cardwell Primary

This project has been more than two years in the making, but it was worth the wait! Cardwell is a lovely community school in the heart of Woolwich and has longed for a whole school library the children can visit during lesson time and lunchtime, but has never had a space that worked.

After calling in ABC for help, the school decided to repurpose a classroom sized intervention space by building partition walls and redirecting walk through routes to create not only a library but a comfortable reading area outside it.

With the woodland forest theme decided by the pupils, ABC set to work alongside carpentry partners Olivbells,  to create a stunning library complete with a tree arch.

There were lots of little touches to this project, from inspirational reading quotes on the walls to squirrels in the trees, each detail gives the children something different to notice every time they use the space.

ABC supporters Eltham College ran a book drive to collect books for the project, and author and teacher at Eltham College Tom Mitchell came along to cut the ribbon and sign copies of his book.

It was clear from the children’s faces that they are in love with their new reading retreat and we’re sure they will enjoy using it to read for pleasure for many years to come.
